Sadly, Dr. Herbert Axelrod has passed away. If you have ever had a fish in your tank with the word “axelrodi” as part of its name it’s because it was named after this fellow. As a scientist and discoverer he has been an ever-present part of our hobby and his influence will be felt for generations to come.

My atlas is one of my prized books.

Fish atlas cover art.
This is available on Amazon and can often be found at used bookstores.

I highly recommend the body of work he has left behind for anyone digging into this hobby. Even if all you did was look at the pictures of the fish he cataloged you would have a wealth of enjoyment from the experience. Head on over to the link below for a list of fish, and accomplishments from his life. I think you will be impressed and feel that a great individual has passed from the hobby.

It is with sadness we report the passing of Dr. Herbert Richard Axelrod, one of the aquarium hobby’s pioneering and most influential experts, on May 15, 2017. Dr. Axelrod was 89 years old
